前瞻产业研究院发布的《2018-2023年中国零售行业市场前瞻与投资战略规划分析报告》分析指出，当前便利店行业面临三大发展痛点。缺乏便利店特色，便利性优势难以体现。
在中国，大多数的便利店都与中小型超市没有明显差异。在货品选择上，没有自主开发新的商品或者领导其他人开发特色商品的能力。商品种类与陈列也都雷同，大都只销售日常生活用品，就像是超市概念的复制，或者说是延伸。并没有真正意义的突出便利店的特色。许多中国消费者更将便利店视为街头巷尾遍布的小卖部。然而在欧美，品牌和服务被视为企业的核心竞争力。据相关调查显示，独创商品占50%以上才能达到30%的毛利，才能体现出一个便利店的独特个性。缺乏现代化的管理，物流配送环节较弱。
当代的连锁便利店仍然延续着传统的用纸笔记录的管理经营方式。虽然有不少连锁便利店已经引用了现代化的办公设备进行一些交易经营记录。但他们并没有在实际的操作中形成较为完善的营运办公网络，在信息共享、物流配送和商品采购等方面还是使用人工操作过多。这些对于连锁便利店的发展都有着较大的局限性。自身经营水平与管理能力落后，缺乏合理政策支持。
便利店经营特点之一就是运用先进的现代计算机技术提供信息化的技术支持，而目前很多连锁便利店缺乏这一方面的技术支持，使得各个连锁便利加盟店之间在日常经营中出现信息交流不畅等问题，影响正常经营活动。同时，便利店企业管理精益性亟待提升，以对抗成本增加的局面。
据统计，2017年，便利店行业中水电、人工与房租成本分别增加了6.9%、12%与18%。店铺资源加速稀缺，以至于未来租金成本上涨压力仍然存在；人员流动性大幅提升，加剧人员成本的上升，而水电成本的增加亦不容忽视。资本持续关注便利店发展。前瞻产业研究院监测数据显示，2017年-2018年7月9日，便利店市场中共有71起融资事件，而大多数便利店的融资目的均为智能化、数字化转型——无人便利/无人零售，同时降低成本。其中，天使轮、Pre-A和A轮融资占比过半，无人便利初创企业发展火热。巨头布局无人便利
便利店发展转型核心仍在运营效率和消费体验无人便利店成为便利店行业的新玩法，分为开架式和闭架式两种。2017年，无人便利店市场规模约0.4亿元，预计2020年可达到33亿元。无人商店概念从诞生起就自带资本、互联网光环。国内品牌便利店纷至尝鲜，除了上图中的资本密布，国内互联网巨头也在紧跟实体布局。例如京东全资控股的无人便利店，以及阿里巴巴全资控股以人工智能和物联网技术为依托的无人零售概念试点项目。无人概念将推动消费者购物路径全面走向数字化，催生多种零售业态。2017年，无人便利店密集地落地，其中一部分又惨淡关店收场，说明便利店的转型、演进不能只是靠“无人”来减成本、提高科技新潮附加值，更应该关注的是便利店运营的效率和消费者本身的购物体验。传统便利店在供应链、客户管理和智能门店等方面积极探索数字化变革，如7-ELEVENded供应链信息系统、全家的CRM等。同时，便利店也应紧密围绕自有品牌和鲜食、半成品，建立商品差异性，来贴近目标客群的生活方式，细分商品、店群或子业态，整合复合业态和增值业务，提供一站式体验。
前瞻认为，便利店需根据短、中、长发展阶段的不同任务目标，来逐步实现全面能力提升。
